Candy Corn

I did it.  I succumbed to the lure of candy corn. I broke down and bought a bag. There is just something lovely about candy corn.  It is sweet.  Sickly sweet.  Almost too sweet.  There is a soft chewiness and I eat them one by one.  Yellow bottom first, orange middle second and finish with the tiny tip of white at the top.  All that is fine and good, but the real draw for me is how beautiful candy corn is!  It just looks like fall.

Candy corn rates right up there with pumpkin spice lattes.  Both arrive when we are fully in the midst of Autumn.  By the time the last leaves have fallen and the final trick-or-treaters have come and gone, when Thanksgiving turkeys and yams fill the grocery ads, I am sad to say, I find myself pretty sick of both candy corn and pumpkin spice lattes, so maybe it is good they only come around once a year.  Like egg-nog.

But right now the air is crisp, the trees are glorious and pumpkins line my porch.  A cinnamon candle is burning, and next to it, a glass bowl is filled with candy corn.  It is a lazy weekend afternoon, errands are run.  I finished a great book yesterday and don’t have the heart to start a new one so soon, so I sit to write with a pumpkin spice latte in my hand.  Thoughts of Thanksgiving are far away and Christmas even further.  I remind myself to enjoy these small things, both man-made, things such as candy corn or a Starbucks latte, perfectly hot, not too sweet, and those of nature like the color of the trees and the way the air feels on my face.

  1. I can’t wait for it to get cool enough to enjoy some candy corn and a latte. This reminded me of many fall days. And the cool thing about candy corn; it’s not Halloween candy. LOL. You can enjoy is all fall!
